Artist Surprises with Phosphorescent Paintings Anna Chan:No, this is not an art gallery's version of the Emperor's New Clothes. These canvases are not actually blank. Like a clever secret, paintings of nudes, rock musicians and historical figures come to life only under the ultraviolet light.These are the works of Filipino artist Edd Aragon, who specializes in ultraviolet-reactive paintings.Aragon is an award-winning editorial and comic strip cartoonist.Challenged by how he could make his paintings for a bar in Sydney become visible under disco light, he started exploring UV-reactive paint materials in 2004.[Edd Aragon, Artist]:"It's fun, because I can work in the dark and it has a bit of novelty in it, but not gimmickry because all my paintings are permanent. And I assure you, I tested all the materials four years under the sun, just to tell me which kind of pigments will fade, which one will yellow, which one will deteriorate easily. But I'm confident that it will last forever as long as you don't put them under direct sunlight or under the rain or the elements."His themes include rock music icons and historical Filipino figures.Aragon says the potential of UV art is limitless.[Edd Aragon, Artist]:"There's also the novelty of, like you're a family and two of your family members are gone, so in normal daylight I can actually paint something which is visible in daylight under normal light, but when you turn on the UV light, the two family members who have passed away will be revealed. So it's a bit spooky."He says ultraviolet painting is also romantic, nocturnal and mysterious.The exhibit runs through the end of the month. |
